A Message from Principal
(Click here to view Chinese Version)
China has more than
five thousand years of history.
Chinese language is the key to opening this enormous cultural
treasure chest. If there were no
schools to teach language and culture to overseas Chinese, new
generations could receive the benefits of only one culture and
language, that of the local population.
What a pity it would be, for them to be ignorant about their
Chinese heritage.
Recognizing an opportunity to relay
Chinese culture and language to children of the local Chinese community
in conjunction with the good news of Christ’s love, Long Island Abundant
Life Church
started the Mandarin
Chinese School
back in 1980. It is worth mentioning that all of our teachers are
Christians who teach with heart felt enthusiasm, loving care and
patience.
We added Cantonese classes about ten
years later in order to offer the same opportunities for the Cantonese
speaking families. Up until now, we are still the only Chinese school
that offers both Mandarin and Cantonese in the Long
Island area.
In addition to instruction in the
classroom, the Chinese school also runs several competitions and
activities, such as Dictionary and Speech contests, Talent shows,
Chinese Painting, and Chinese Yo Yo.
We have ordered some beautiful and great Children’s books
from Taiwan and Hong Kong, which are available for our students
to borrow. If parents can find
some time to read with their children, we believe it can increase
reading abilities and interest.
We are also planning to add Chinese history and culture to the
curriculum to broaden students’ knowledge.
It is not
easy to teach our children their Chinese language and culture when they
are immersed in an English environment.
We need to have a clear goal towards which we can move
courageously. We also need
perseverance so that we can encourage each other not to give up. The
Bible tells us, “You reap
what you sow”. As long as
we have the commitment of our teachers and the support of the parents,
we believe we can move upwards against the current to transform a
cultural desert into a cultural oasis.
Chinese school tightens the bonds of Chinese people. The thread of our common Chinese
heritage links us and together we will go forward with one heart. Let us work hand in hand to face the
new challenge in this new millennium!
Finally we wish all the best to our new generations!
