9/23 Friday 8:00pm - 10:00pm Plenary session - Rev. James Cha; title - “Light Shines in the Darkness”; text – John 1:1-9
Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness (John 1:1-9), and when He lived on earth 2000 years ago, His life was the light of men in various ways. We will look at examples from the Scripture and from the mission field to understand how the people living in darkness encountered the true light through God’s truth, His love and His power.
9/24 Saturday 2:00pm - 3:15pm Workshop 1 - Faith Cha –title - “Ministering to Muslim Women”
What is life like behind the dark veils of the Muslim women? What does Islam teach about Muslim women and marriage? Come and learn about the Muslim women’s worldview, and how you, as an ambassador of Jesus Christ, can reach out to a Muslim woman in a loving and Christ-exalting way!
9/24 Saturday 4:00pm - 5:15pm Workshop 2 - Tiffany Ling; topic: "Reaching the Unreached through New York City."
In Acts 17, Paul's message to the Athenians states that God has determined the times and places where men would live so that they would seek Him. God has brought many people groups from countries closed to the gospel to live in New York City. Who are these groups and how can we reach them? What is our role in carrying out the Great Commission? We will discuss missions domestically with a focus on Arab Muslims.
9/24 Saturday 7:30pm (plenary) – Rev. James Cha; “Loving God and Loving the Lost”; Matthew 22:37-39
What does it mean to love God with all your heart, soul and mind and then to love your neighbor as yourself? (Matthew 22:37-39). How can we fulfill the Great Commission in today’s pluralistic society without compromising the Greatest Commandment? We will take a look at the history of the Korean Church, including the tragic chapter of compromise with Shinto worship (idolatry)…and how that sheds warning against similar compromise in cross-cultural missions today.
9/25 Sunday 10:00am - 11:30am LIALC Sunday worship – Rev. James Cha; “River of Life”; Ezekiel 47
The lure of the American Dream is to live out the rest of our lives in financial, emotional and physical security. It can be likened to living in a summer cottage next to a quiet pond. The Bible’s portrayal of following Jesus Christ is more like jumping into a rushing river that demands full surrender…but wherever the river takes us, there is life. We will see what it means to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in the 21st Century.
9/25 Sunday - 11:30am – Sunday school – Faith Cha; title – “Loving the Refugees”
God tells us to love and accept the refugees/aliens and immigrants in our society (Deuteronomy 10:17-19; Luke 10:25-37) because we are all aliens here on earth. You will learn Biblically based principles in loving the refugees, including Muslims from the Middle East, whom God is bringing into our community (Acts 17:26,27).
9/25 Sunday – 3:00 – 6:30PM Walking prayer in Muslim Community
The closest Muslim neighborhood that we could walk through with clearly identifiable Muslims would be Jamaica, Queens. They are primarily Bangladeshi, Pakistani, with a little of Afghani and Yemeni. We will spend about an hour indoors talking about what we will be doing and practicing our testimonies. Ultimately, the goal would be to get people practicing having cross-cultural conversations and leaving good will towards Christ, while saturating the neighborhood with prayer.
We will then break up into groups of 2s or 3s, by gender or by married couple. We will be out in the neighborhood praying, walking, shopping, eating - maybe 2 hours? Then back at the church for a half hour-ish debrief and prayer. So the total schedule will be:
⦁ 3pm-4pm: Preparation
⦁ 4pm-6pm: Out in the field
⦁ 6pm-6:30pm: Debrief and closing
For those who would like to get more involved, I will provide information about my missions organization and workers at the closing. My coworkers and I are VERY curious as to how the East Asian Muslims would respond to Chinese believers rather than white Western faces. So this would be a fruitful activity towards the long term strategy. Also, I think it would be fine to bring along mooncake.
