Men's Group

Our men's group is currently reading though "God in the Dock" by C.S. Lewis. This is a collection of essays by Lewis on topics relating to theology and ethics. The essays to read for our next meeting are:
Bulverism
The Sermon and the Lunch
The Humanitarian View of Punishment
Is Progress Possible?
Discussion Questions:
Bulverism
P. 273 - You must show that a man is wrong before you start explaining why he is wrong. How did people become so arrogant to assume that someone is wrong without proving it first? Is the church at fault for this, by alway coming down heavy handed with concepts of absolute truths only because the author is God? Is the modern world merely the product of disillusioned parishioners? But can we ever prove God wrong if we are to say He is wrong?
P. 274 - Until Bulverism is crushed, reason can play no effective part in human affairs. How can it be defeated when our educational system is filled with individuals who accept and even champion Bulverism?
The Sermon and the Lunch
P. 284-286 - please comment on C S Lewis' principles of Christian home life.
The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment
What is your idea of the humanitarian view of punishment does it hold merit?
Since the idea of Desert is removed from the humanitarian understanding of punishment, people who commit crimes are not guilty but merely sick and need a cure. Holding this view is it possible for the secular legal system to properly treat the clinically insane?
Is Progress Possible
P. 313 - If society can mend, remake and unmake men at its pleasure, it's pleasure, may of course, be humane or homicidal. What does this say about systems of governments are strong central governments a good thing or conversely are weak ones?
P. 314 - Do you believe that classical political theory, with it's Stoical, Christian, and juristic key conceptions (natural law, the value of the individual, the rights of man) has died?
P. 314 - Frightening thought: There is nothing left of which we can say to them, mind your own business. Our whole lives are their business. Please comment?
Lewis comments about his fears of growing government, as Christians should we be wary of government encroachment of our liberties or should Christians distance themselves from e affairs of government and secular issues?
